On April 17, Michael Penn's first ever "Best of" CD will be released to the masses. And it only took 18 years.
Many people don't recognize the name Michael Penn until you mention one of two distinguishing characteristics:
1.) He is Sean Penn's older brother
2.) "He sang that 'Romeo in black jeans'" song back in, like, 1990"
But anyone who knows his music knows that Michael is one of the best songwriters and pop musicians working today. Although he doesn't get along well with big record labels (hence a lack of mass popularity thanks to zero marketing support or distribution from his former labels), his talent ensures a loyal and pervasive following, thanks to echoes of the likes of Dylan, McCartney and more, all with his own unique flair.
For years I have been encouraging friends to buy his new albums as they are released...at a glacial pace (1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2005).
But Michael is a perfectionist, and the time he takes to craft each album results in a well-honed pop music masterpiece each and every time.
And now Sony is wrapping all of it up in one neat package that will be something special for long time fans AND those looking for something to shake them out of their FM doldrums.
On April 17, "Palms & Runes + Tarot & Tea - A Michael Penn Collection" will (finally) be released. Not just a recap of Michael's best songs, this 20-track album includes alternate versions of some classics (including what is arguably his best track, "Try"), and never before heard works that are sure to please even the most die-hard fan (yours included).
Seriously. Go buy it. You will not regret it. It will be the best $9.97 you spend all year.
